Democrats and Republicans extended the disastrous Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest in 2010. It’s a good thing progressives have made sure that the conversation on tax fairness didn’t end there.
Since then, progressives -- including the hundreds of thousands who joined as supporters of Progressives United -- have demanded a more equitable system that makes sure those who rake in the most also pay their fair share. Now, the President and leaders in Congress are taking up the call.
This week, Democratic leaders are working the stump to push the Buffett Rule, named for billionaire investor Warren Buffett who rightly pointed out the fundamental unfairness that he pays a lower tax rate than his secretary. The measure will be up for a vote in the Senate on Monday.
The Buffett Rule is a good step in the right direction, but it doesn’t go nearly far enough. We need to push Democrats to go further. That’s why Progressives United is joining with CREDO Action to pressure the Democratic leadership to allow the Bush tax cuts that only benefit the wealthiest Americans to expire, and to reform the corporate tax code – so that big corporations making billions pay their fair share.
The current laws have been mighty friendly to the biggest corporations. In a stunning report released this week, the Center for Tax Justice found that 26 huge corporations -- which have taken in massive profits to the collective tune of $200,000,000,000 -- haven’t paid one cent in taxes over the last four years.
To establish fairness in this country, where the voices of average people count as much as the voices of the wealthiest Americans, we need to close the loopholes that let corporations get away without paying taxes and let the disastrous Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest expire.
Join with Progressives United and CREDO Action to tell the Democratic leadership that the Buffett Rule is not enough. They need to ensure that the Bush tax cuts only benefiting the wealthiest Americans become a thing of the past, and that corporations pay their fair share. Sign our petition to Democratic leaders today.
