A new poll out today makes it clearer than ever that Americans are tired of seeing their democracy trampled by the stampede of unlimited money in this election season.

According to a Washington Post-ABC News poll, 69 percent of Americans believe that super PACs should be illegal. The poll results provide a window into the disgust Americans rightly feel toward these big-money groups that have allowed mega-wealthy individuals and corporations to overtake the 2012 election.

Drilling deeper into the poll numbers, the results should be an alarming wake-up call to candidates benefiting from massive spending on their behalf. Among independents, who control the coveted middle in a tight election year, a stunning 78 percent think super PACs should be illegal. Among all voters, a majority (52 percent) feel strongly that super PACs should have no place in the election. 

The big-money charade playing out right now is clearly touching a nerve in the electorate. Super PACs supporting GOP candidates and President Obama’s campaign are fueling a wave of negativity as they fund attack ad after attack ad. The current broken system is showing that it can hardly bear its own crushing weight as voters of all political stripes reject unlimited, undisclosed campaign spending.
